Description

The Leonardo Seaspray 5000E is an X-band active electronically scanned array (AESA) multi-mode surveillance radar with an instrumented range of 370 km (200 nautical miles). It employs a hybrid scanning approach, combining mechanical antenna rotation with electronic beam steering, to offer a cost-effective solution for diverse missions, from long-range search to the detection of small targets. Weighing less than 45 kg (99 lb) and comprising only an antenna (430 x 280 x 140 mm) and a processor (500 x 260 x 210 mm), the system is suitable for installation on both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. Its design incorporates a lightweight AESA derived from Leonardo's picoSAR system and shares a common processor with larger Seaspray models. The radar provides synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and inverse SAR imaging, alongside air-to-air and ground moving target indication data. The Seaspray 5000E has been delivered for SAR operations on Challenger aircraft and is in service on the Sikorsky S-92 SAR helicopter and Brazilian Air Force P-95BM aircraft.
