Description

The AN/APN-242 is an X-band (9375 ±10 MHz) airborne color weather and navigation radar manufactured by Northrop Grumman (originally Sperry Marine) as a replacement for the AN/APN-59. Its antenna unit features a flat-plate array with a 360° free rotation, electronically controlled for instantaneous fan beam/pencil beam switching, and is stabilized using existing aircraft attitude reference systems. The receiver/transmitter employs a solid-state design with a low-noise receiver and a 25 kW peak power magnetron, offering digitally controlled pulse width (0.2 to 4.5 µs) and pulse repetition frequency (180 to 1024 Hz), contributing to a mean time between critical failures (MTBCF) exceeding 1,000 hours. The ASN-165 Display Group provides high-resolution color or monochrome radar imagery, overlaid with navigation data, and can integrate information from station keeping equipment (SKE), self-contained navigation systems (SCNS), and traffic collision avoidance systems (TCAS), with night vision goggle compatibility in green mode.
