Description

The RP-5G is an Air Traffic Control Radar, specifically a Precision Approach Radar (PAR), manufactured by the former Tesla company in Pardubice, Czech Republic. Operating in the 9250-9500 MHz frequency range, it is still in service at many airports across Eastern Europe and Asia. The system comprises two independent radar units, one for course and one for glide path, each utilizing two tunable magnetron transmitters with frequency diversity, separated by 150 MHz, and a 1-microsecond time interval between transmit pulses. It employs three different pulse repetition frequencies (1.8, 2, 2.2 kHz ±10%) in a 9:10:11 ratio, repeated every three pulse periods, to mitigate blind speeds in moving target indication. The receivers have a 30 MHz intermediate frequency, a 3.2 MHz bandwidth, and an 8 dB noise figure. Its parabolic reflector antennas, with a 0.62° ±0.12° azimuth beamwidth and 0.44° elevation beamwidth, feature horn feeds and polarizers, allowing for linear or circular polarization; circular polarization enhances the detection of aircraft within precipitation by suppressing reflections from hydrometeors. The horizontal course antenna swivels ±10° or ±15° from the centerline with a mechanical tilt range of -2.5° to +7.5°, while the vertical glide slope antenna nods -1° to +9° from the horizontal, completing a cycle at approximately 0.6 Hz for a data renewal rate of at least 1 Hz.
