Description
The SWS2 Chinese 8x8 Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft System is a combination of a 35mm revolver cannon and a block of four surface-to-air missiles, mounted on a remote-controlled turret that sits atop an 8x8 VN1 armored platform. The System reaction time is quoted as 8 seconds with a high level of automation, and it can also be linked with other air-defense assets.

Mission Systems
The radar sensor package includes a C-band search radar with a maximum range of 20 km and a Ku-band tracking radar with a maximum range of 18 km, although performance would depend on the radar cross-section of the target.
The stabilized sensor package is mounted on the left side on the lower part of the turret, and this is understood to include day/thermal optronics and a laser rangefinder. This would enable targets to be detected and tracked in a high electronic threat environment when the radars would be shut down to avoid being targeted by anti-radiation missiles. According to Norinco, the SWS2 can track and engage two targets simultaneously.
Ancillary Systems
Standard equipment includes an air conditioning system and it is probable that an auxiliary power unit (APU) is fitted to enable the system to operate with the main engine switched off.
Operations and Maintenance
System reaction time is quoted as 8 seconds with a high level of automation, and it can also be linked with other air-defense assets.

Note
The remote-controlled turret is armed with a 35 mm revolver cannon and a pod of four SAMs. Turret traverse is 360° with gun elevation from -2 to 85° while SAM elevation is from -5 to 70°. The revolver cannon has a maximum slant range of 4,000 m and a maximum effective height of 3,000 m with 400 rounds of ammunition being carried. According to Norinco officials, the cannon is designed to fire a Chinese version of the Advanced Hit Efficiency and Destruction (AHEAD) shell, which can be programmed to burst 152 tungsten pellets close to its target.
Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM)
Note
The fire-and-forget infrared (IR) homing SAM system has a maximum lethal slant range of 8,000 m and a minimum lethal slant range of 2,000 m, while minimum and maximum target height for an engagement has been quoted as 10 m and 4,500 m respectively. The missiles are based on the Luoyang TY-90. From the model displayed at Eurosatory 2016, it would appear that SAM reloads are not carried so the system has to depend on resupply vehicles for missile replenishment.
Protection
Armor
The hull and turret are made of all-welded steel armour and provide protection from small arms fire and shell splinters. Banks of electrically operated grenade launchers are mounted either side of the hull.
