Description

The AN/SPY-4, manufactured by Lockheed Martin in the United States, was a long-range naval air surveillance radar operating in the S band (IEEE designation) or E/F band (NATO designation), with an instrumented range of 250 nautical miles (460 km). Designed for U.S. Zumwalt-class destroyers, it was intended to function as part of a dual-band radar system alongside the AN/SPY-3, sharing data processing and operational control. The system utilized three to four active phased-array antennas, each containing over 6,100 individual elements. Only one of the four produced AN/SPY-4 sets was deployed for testing on the USS Gerald R. Ford before the project was canceled in 2010 due to operational problems and high costs. The AN/SPY-4 on the USS Gerald R. Ford was subsequently replaced by the AN/SPY-6(V)3, while the AN/SPY-3 on Zumwalt-class destroyers was reprogrammed for volume search capabilities, albeit with reduced range.
