Description

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) is shifting the role of its CH-7 stealth unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from a strategic armed reconnaissance asset to a tactical stealth surveillance platform. This information was reported by Chinese state-owned media during Airshow China 2024. The state-owned newspaper Global Times describes the CH-7 as a "peer competitor" to the Northrop Grumman RQ-180, which is currently in service with the U.S. Air Force. The RQ-180 is designed to conduct intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations in areas protected by adversary air-defense systems. Aerospace CH UAV Co, a Chinese firm involved in the development of the CH-7, noted that the UAV made its debut at Airshow China in 2018 as a stealth reconnaissance and strike platform for strategic operations. However, developments in modern warfare and changing client demands have led to a transformation of the UAV's role into that of a "stealth early warning" platform.

Note Despite claims by Aerospace CH UAV that the CH-7 will serve as a stealth-based ISR platform, the UAV was presented alongside air-launched weapons at Airshow China 2024. The weapons included air-to-ground missiles such as the TL-1C, TL-2, TL-2D, TL-2F, TL-2H, AR11, AR-2, AR-2C, AR-1B, AR-1K, AR-4, plus the AR-5 loitering missile, and precision-guided munitions such as the FT-7, FT-7A, FT-8B, FT-8C, FT-9 and FT-12. Air-launched effects (ALEs) were also displayed alongside the UAV, such as the CH-817A micro-attack UAV. The TY-14 airborne high-speed anti-radiation missile was also shown. It is unclear, however, if all the munitions displayed alongside the CH-7 will be integrated with the UAV.
