Description

The Piranha-13 Russian Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is the largest and most capable variant, designed as a heavy-lift multirole platform. The Piranha-13 has been actively employed in the conflict in Ukraine since mid-2024. Its mine-laying capability has been particularly significant, as the high density of enemy reconnaissance and strike drones in the combat zone has made traditional sapper-based mine-laying extremely dangerous. The drone allows remote emplacement of anti-tank minefields near enemy positions without risking sapper teams.

Electronic Warfare Resistance One of the Piranha-13's most notable features is its multi-frequency communication system, which represents a significant evolution in Russian FPV drone design. Traditional FPV drones operate on fixed communication frequencies, making them vulnerable to electronic reconnaissance (RER) and electronic warfare (EW) jamming. The Piranha's system operates on non-standard frequencies and allows the operator to switch radio channels in real time during flight. When enemy EW systems begin jamming one frequency, the operator simply shifts to another and continues the mission. After combat testing, the Russian Ministry of Defense reportedly acknowledged the "innovativeness" of the Piranha video transmitters and their high degree of protection against electronic countermeasures.
