Description

The VU-T10 is a Chinese tracked unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) comprising a tracked platform and a remote control station located within a command-and-control vehicle. The UGV features a turret designed in accordance with the specifications of a large unmanned turret, and it is equipped with various sensors for localization and navigation, facilitating both remote and autonomous operations. Among these sensors are two photoelectric units. The hull of the VU-T10 extends over the tracks, featuring a frontal lower plate with a steep inclination. The upper plate, which has a gentler slope, includes a louvre on the left side of the centerline, a rectangular hatch on the right side presumably for access to the powerplant, and a smaller hatch positioned adjacent to the larger one. White, orange, and green lights are situated on both sides of the lower plate, secured by three protective metal bars. Both the left and right sides of the VU-T10 are flat and incorporate a louvre towards the rear, while hinged skirts provide protection for the tracks. The rear side of the vehicle is also flat, with two hook-eyes located at both the front and rear for towing or securing attachments. Positioned along the centerline approximately in the middle of the hull, the turret is equipped with a cannon and a co-axial machine gun (MG) on its left side. It also includes three front-facing smoke dischargers on the right of the cannon and five on its left. An electro-optical module is mounted on the right side of the cannon, with a second module located on top of the turret toward its rear right side. Furthermore, the VU-T10 incorporates an unspecified forward-facing sensor affixed to the front edge of the upper plate along the centerline. This sensor is protected by a glass cover on the front and a metal hood on the other sides, which obscures its identification. It is noteworthy that a previous prototype of the VU-T10 was equipped with a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) device in this same position. A forward-facing sensor is strategically located along the centerline of the lower plate. The VU-T10 is equipped with four distinct groups of electro-optical devices: one forward-facing sensor positioned along the centerline on the upper section of the lower plate; one backward-facing sensor situated along the centerline on the upper section of the rear hull; and two forward-facing sensors placed on either side of the hull towards the rear. Furthermore, the VU-T10 incorporates two antennas, each positioned on the rear of the hull, one on each side.

Human-machine interface The VU-T10 is operated remotely from a command-and-control vehicle, which is controlled by two to three operators. The command-and-control vehicle for the VU-T10 is a variant of the Beibei 1928 truck.
Autonomous capabilities The VU-T10 is claimed to have object-tracking and detection capabilities.
Measurement and Signature Intelligence Sensors The VU-T10 electro-optical modules are equipped with three distinct sensors: a day camera, a night sensor, and a thermal camera. The Pan-and-Tilt mount provides the rear module with comprehensive 360º coverage, while the front module is primarily responsible for turret rotation. Furthermore, the VU-T10 features a compartment designed to accommodate a multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), thereby augmenting its communication, range, and surveillance capabilities. This UAV can serve as a repeater, further enhancing the remote control functionality of the VU-T10. However, specific information regarding the range of the UAV has not been disclosed.
Localisation and navigation sensors The array of cameras positioned on the front lower plate of the VU-T10 is likely comprised of a day camera, a low-visibility camera, and a thermal camera. The cameras located on the rear and side sections are presumably all day cameras. Additionally, the VU-T10 is equipped with a solid-state LiDAR system that offers a scanning range of 270 degrees and includes 40 scanning lines. It also features a single set of millimeter-wave radar, which is installed on the lower section of the platform’s armor. Furthermore, the platform is integrated with a BeiDou second-generation satellite-based radio navigation system.
Communication The VU-T10 is capable of operation from a specified distance of 800 meters in a line-of-sight (LoS) configuration. Furthermore, the platform supports tethered communication through a UAV-based communication equipment system. Upon release, the aerial vehicle remains tethered to the top of the platform, which enhances its operational range by functioning as a signal repeater. This capability is similarly applicable to other unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), such as the MUV, which is reported to have an operational range exceeding 25 kilometers. However, specific details regarding the operational altitude and tether length are currently unavailable.

Note The VU-T10 is equipped with the same turret used on Norinco's VN22 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV). It features a 30 mm cannon and a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun. On the right side of the turret, there is a retractable pod launcher for Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) that can fire two Red Arrow 8 missiles. Additionally, the turret is outfitted with two sets of three smoke grenade launchers on each side.
Protection
Armor The platform is reported to be armored and safeguarded against small and medium-caliber ammunition, including shell fragments. Based on the available information and the intended missions for the platform, estimates that it is likely to provide protection against kinetic threats up to Level 2 according to STANAG 4569. This level corresponds to protection against assault rifles, such as 7.62mm rounds, fired from a distance of up to 30 meters. Additionally, the VU-T10 is equipped with the same turret that is mounted on Norinco's VN22 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV).
