Description
The Barak 8 Israeli Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) Air Missile System also known as LR-SAM or MR-SAM is an Indo-Israeli jointly developed surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, designed to defend against any type of airborne threat including aircraft, helicopters, anti-ship missiles, and UAVs as well as ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and combat jets. Both maritime and land-based variants of the system exist.

Variants
Barak ER
Barak ER is the extended-range (ER) version of the Barak LR (Barak-8). It is essentially the base model Barak LR missile with the addition of a large-diameter jettisonable booster motor estimated to be equipped with a TVC system. Modifications to the guidance software are likely, as are modifications to the weapon control system and launcher.
The booster increases the length of the missile at launch to nearly 6 m. The length in flight after the booster has been jettisoned may be slightly less than the base Barak-8 missile if a TVC is not present.
Barak MX system
The Barak MX is a modular and scalable networked air/missile defence system that links sensors, launchers, and Barak effectors in a single architecture. Barak MX is designed to be integrated and interchangeable with Barak weapon systems. Barak MX is integrated with three principal effector types: the Barak MRAD, Barak LRAD, and the Barak ER .

Engine
The missile is powered by a dual-pulse solid-propellant rocket motor. Its design is estimated to be similar to that used by the Astra Mk2 air-to-air beyond-visual-range missile.
The propulsion system gives the missile a high-speed and maneuvering capability in the terminal phase, in addition to a range in excess of 70 km
Guidance System
Guidance is achieved by a combination of an autopilot/inertial navigation system and the active radar seeker. The autopilot is used until the missile is close enough to the target for the seeker to be used. Should the target deviate from its expected course or in order to re-target the missile the autopilot can receive mid-course updates from the launch platform via its tail-mounted datalink antenna. The datalink also downlinks to the launch vessel, mainly data on the missile's health. Once close enough to the target the seeker is activated and the missile homes in, sending data on the target via the downlink.
Seeker
The missile uses an active radar seeker.
Control
The missile uses two sets of control surfaces and a TVC system. It is not known if the TVC is used just for the turnover maneuver and then jettisoned, as with Barak-1, or whether it is used for the entire flight. Unlike the external linkages used in Barak-1, control linkages to the TVC system from the rear control fin actuators run within the body of the missile. The missile is reported to be capable of 80 g maneuvers.
Warhead
The missile is fitted with a 23 kg blast fragmentation warhead.
