Description

The AN/SPS-55 is a naval surface search and navigation radar operating in the X-band (9.05–10 GHz), designed as a solid-state replacement for the AN/SPS-10. It features a low-noise, image-reject mixer and utilizes two back-to-back slotted array antennas, each with an absolute gain of 31 dB at midband; one is circularly polarized, and the other is linear-horizontally polarized. Each antenna produces a fan beam, narrow in azimuth (1.5 degrees) and broad in elevation (20 degrees), with an instrumented range of 190 km and a range resolution of 200 m. The transmitter employs a magnetron with a peak power of 130 kW, capable of operating with two different pulse repetition frequencies (e.g., 750 pps) and pulse durations (e.g., 1 µsec) while maintaining a constant duty cycle. Over 200 units have been produced for global deployment.
