AN/SPN-41
The AN/SPN-41 is an Instrument Carrier Landing System (ICLS) operating in the Ku band (15.412–15.688 GHz), also known as the J band by NATO. Although not technically a radar, this precision electronic approach and landing aid provides shipboard guidance to U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aircraft. It transmits glideslope and centerline deviation information via a microwave beam, received by an AN/ARA-63 receiver in the aircraft and displayed to the pilot as azimuth and elevation needles. The system utilizes separate parabolic reflector antennas for azimuth and elevation, guiding aircraft to align with the runway centerline and a standard glide path to the ship's deck. With a peak power of 2.2 kW, an average power of 7 W, and an instrumented range of 48 nautical miles (89 km), the AN/SPN-41 ICLS has been in use on aircraft carriers since the early 1970s.
