30N6E “Flap Lid”
The 30N6E “Flap Lid” is an I/J-band multi-function phased-array engagement radar designed for use with the SA-10 “Grumble” theatre defense missile system. This trailer-mounted radar employs digital beam steering and a 10,000-element transmission-type space-fed phased array with a complex monopulse horn feed into the rear plane of the antenna, utilizing a microwave lens. The antenna stows flat on the roof of the radar cabin, which is mounted on a turntable to cover a 60 or 100-degree sector of interest, and has an instrumented range of 300 km. Two versions exist: Flap Lid A, associated with the semi-mobile SA-10A variant, features an antenna mounted on a tower for improved effectiveness against low-flying targets; Flap Lid B, which is truck-mounted, supports the fully mobile SA-10B version, also known as the S-300 air defense system (Russian designator: 90Ж6). The Flap Lid provides simultaneous tracking of six targets, engaging each with two missiles, and is noted for its high resistance to electronic countermeasures, high-resolution capability, and track-via-missile guidance similar to the US Patriot system. Its target elevation coverage is reported to be from 0 to 50 degrees, with a believed modification to 75 degrees for ballistic missile defense.
