Variants
Fennek, Reconaissance Reconnaissance is the primary role for the Fennek and essentially what is was designed for. In this configuration the crew utilize the vehicle's relatively (compared to a tracked vehicle) low level of noise and profile, combined with EO sensors to conduct long-range reconnaissance.
Fennek, MRAT The Fennek MRAT variant is designed to carry a ground-based anti-tank missile and its crew. Its role is to deploy alongside reconnaissance units and engage armored targets from a distance when the combat situation precludes evasion or a target of opportunity presents itself.
Fennek, Stinger Weapons Platform (SWP) The Dutch Army uses the Fennek as a carrier for its ground-based short-range air defense system. It is used in this role to carry a launcher for SAMs and provide protection for mechanized forces.
Fennek, Joint Fire Support Team (JFST) The Fennek JSFT is a development of the reconnaissance vehicle, which is used as a fires coordination vehicle and typically operates as a team to safely coordinate and direct indirect fire and air-ground missions. The JFST distinction is reserved for German vehicles, whereas the Dutch Army is understood to make reference only to a forward observation platform or VWRN. The differences between the Dutch and German vehicles are delineated under the Mission systems heading.
Fennek, mortar carrier The Dutch Army is known to operate a number of Fenneks as carriers for 81 mm mortars. In this configuration the mortar tube and base plate are carried on the roof of the vehicle. It is not immediately obvious whether the vehicle also carries a loading system to take the mortar from the roof of the vehicle to the ground. It is also unclear whether the vehicle carries ammunition and FCSs for the weapon.
