Description

The ASARS-2 (Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar System-2) is an X-band, high-resolution, multi-mode synthetic aperture radar (SAR) manufactured by Hughes Electronics in the United States. Designed in the early 1980s for the Lockheed U-2 TR-1 spy aircraft, it detects and accurately locates fixed and moving ground targets, gathers detailed information, formats the data, and transmits high-resolution images in real time. The radar is housed in a distinctive long nose radome, which features a hump on top compared to other reconnaissance variants, while a separate prominent radome above the fuselage contains satellite communication equipment. Raytheon has provided upgrades under the ASARS Improvement Program (AIP) to enhance its capabilities.
