Airframe
Higher proportion of carbon fibre and aluminium-lithium alloy in fuselage; composites used for components such as leading-edge flaps, nosewheel door, and radomes.
Controls
Four-channel analogue fly-by-wire, with no mechanical back-up; artificial feel; relaxed longitudinal stability; full-span leading-edge flaps and plain inboard flaperons controlled manually for take-off and landing, computer-controlled in flight; no ailerons; differential/collective tailerons operate in conjunction with flaperons and rudders for pitch and roll control, with maximum deflections +15/-20°; flight control system limits g loading to +9 and normally limits angle of attack to 30–35°; angle-of-attack limiter can be overruled manually for certain flight manoeuvres; large door-type airbrake in top of centre-fuselage.
Display and Instrumentation
Two side-by-side LCDs, each 381 mm (15 inch) and IKSh-1M wide angle collimator head-up display (20×30° view) and control display unit.
Communications
Polet S-108 VHF/UHF radios with voice encryption. IUS-35 data exchange terminal incorporating twin RPKS BAGET-31M computers; automatic data exchange on radio links.
Avionics
Twin BINS-SP-2 strapdown inertial/Glonass (GPS) navigation with digital map. RSBN-85V short-range radio navigation; VND-94 and VIM-95 international navigation; ARK-25 course director.
Radar
Tikhmirov NIIP N135E Irbis-E multifunction phased-array system (Bars derivative), comprising phased element scanning 60° sectors in azimuth and elevation, while hydraulic actuator provides additional 60° in azimuth and 120° in bank; effective azimuth thus 120°. Simultaneous aerial 30-target tracking and two-target engagement capability with semi-active radar homing missiles or eight targets with active radar AAMs; of these, four targets can be at some 162 n miles (300 km; 186 miles). Ground modes include terrain mapping, Doppler beam sharpening, and synthetic aperture. Four-target tracking and two simultaneous attack in ground mode. “Terrain following flight support”. Range up to 216 n miles (400 km; 249 miles) against 3 m2 aerial target.
Number of Hard Points
12 hardpoints, consisting of 2 wingtip rails, and 10 wing and fuselage stations with a capacity of 8,000 kg (17,630 lb) of ordnance.
Maximum Payload
8,000 kg (17,636 lb) [combat]
Landing Gear
Hydraulically retractable tricycle type, made by Hydromash; mainwheels turn 90° while retracting forward into wingroots; hydraulically steerable non-braking, twin nosewheels also retract forward. Mainwheel tyres 1030×350; nosewheel tyres 620×180; braking parachute in tailcone.
