Description

The AN/FPS-16 is a high-precision C-band monopulse tracking radar, specifically designed for range instrumentation at guided missile test centers to monitor missile flight paths. Operating within a frequency range of 5,400 to 5,900 MHz with a peak power of 1 MW, it utilizes a quadruple-subdivided horn and monopulse duplexer, offering either linear vertical or circular polarization. Introduced in the mid-1950s, most of the 60 AN/FPS-16 units and seven transportable AN/MPS-25 variants have been extensively modified with integrated circuit electronics, larger 16-foot diameter antennas, 3 MW transmitters, low-noise receivers, and pulse Doppler capabilities, achieving an instrumented range of up to 7,300 km with an accuracy of ±30 ft.
