Description

The Çafrad (Çok Amaçlı Faz Dizinli Radar, "Multifunctional Phased Array Radar") is a naval radar system developed by the Turkish manufacturer Aselsan for the Turkish Navy. Operating in the S-band with an instrumented range of 450 km, it incorporates active phased array antennas with 10,000 Gallium Nitride (GaN) transmit/receive modules. The system comprises an S-band multifunctional radar (UMR) for airspace and naval reconnaissance, an X-band multifunctional target tracking radar (ÇFR), and an X-band continuous wave target illumination radar (AYR) for semi-active missile guidance, with each radar utilizing four antenna faces, each covering 90° azimuth. Project planning began around 2013-2014, with public announcement at IDEF 2015, and parallel system development and production commenced in early 2016; a land-based, truck-mounted prototype for air defense has been presented and tested, while the naval version was successfully tested on the frigate F 497 (Gabya-class) and is slated for series production by 2021.
