Description

The Normandie (NOuveau Radar du Monge pour ANalyse, Détection et Identification Électromagnétique) is an L-band (IEEE designation) or D-band (NATO designation) pulse-Doppler instrumentation and tracking radar, utilizing dual polarization. Manufactured by Thales in France, this early warning radar was installed in 2009 on a French Navy missile range instrumentation ship, replacing the Stratus and Savoie radars. It features a 14.4-meter diameter Cassegrain antenna and employs two high-power traveling wave tubes, each with a ring bar delay line and 175 kW maximum output power, operating in parallel to feed one polarization direction in Simultaneous Transmission And Reception (STAR) mode. The radar has an instrumented range of 4,000 km, a maximum pulse repetition frequency of 30 kHz, a pulsewidth of 2 ms, a peak power of 300 kW, an average power of 18 kW, and an antenna rotation speed ranging from 0 to 6 revolutions per minute.
