Description
The PLL-05 is based on the ZSL-92 APC. The 'Z' stands for 'armoured' (装甲, zhuangjia), the 'S' for 'transport' (输送, shusong), and the 'L' for 'wheeled' (轮式, lunshi). The hull of the vehicle is boat-shaped with a sloped upper hull. The driver sits on the front left side of the hull, while the commander occupies the right side. Both positions are equipped with circular hatches that open to the rear. The engine compartment is located behind the driver, creating a narrow access corridor on the right side to reach the battle stations in the turret. Access for dismounts is provided through a single-piece door at the rear of the hull. The dismount compartment of the ZSL-92 APC has been modified for SPMH (Self-Propelled Mortar Howitzer) purposes to accommodate the large turret and ammunition. A fully enclosed, welded steel turret is mounted in the center of the roof. This design is very similar to that used by the Russian 120 mm NONA-SVK SPMH, which is mounted on a modified BTR-80 (8×8) APC hull.
