Description

The AN/TPN-22 is a transportable, computerized Precision Approach Radar (PAR) subsystem designed for all-weather landing of tactical aircraft as part of the U.S. MATCALS program. Operating in the X-band (9,000-9,200 MHz) with a peak power of 120 kW, it employs a pencil beam and a planar phased array antenna with 94 radiator groups and PIN-Diode phase shifters for electronic beam steering, providing 8 degrees of angular coverage in elevation (-1 to +7 degrees) and using circular polarization. This track-while-scan radar can simultaneously track up to six aircraft, utilizing a 2-pulse canceler for search and a 3-pulse canceler for track in its Moving Target Indication (MTI) system, with a solid-state modulated traveling wave tube transmitter and an instrumented range of 3 nautical miles (5.5 km).
