Description

The AN/APG-78 "Longbow" is an airborne, Ka-band, millimeter-wave multimode surveillance and fire-control radar and target acquisition system. Operating at a range of 8 to 12 km, it is housed with a radar frequency interferometer in a dome above the main rotor of the Apache AH-64 Attack Helicopter. This elevated position allows target detection while the helicopter remains concealed behind obstacles. The AN/APG-78 can simultaneously track up to 128 targets and engage up to 16, initiating an attack within 30 seconds. An integrated radio modem facilitates data sharing with ground units and other Apaches, enabling coordinated engagements from targets detected by a single helicopter. It is fielded with the US Army's Apache AH-64 Attack Helicopter system.
