Description

The HJ-9 (Red Arrow 9) Chinese Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) System is an advanced, third-generation anti-tank missile system deployed by the People's Liberation Army. The missile was developed by China North Industries Corporation (Norinco), and one of the chief designers was Yang Chunming. It is similar in appearance to the Israeli MAPATS (man-portable anti-tank system), causing speculation about the link between the two missiles. It is also similar to the South African ZT3 Ingwe anti-tank missile. Like the MAPATS and ZT3, the HJ-9 is guided by laser beam riding. The HJ-9 has a maximum range of 5.5 km (3.4 mi) and a minimum range of 100 m (110 yds). Claimed armor penetration is 1,200mm, which is greater than that of the HJ-8. The missile may be fitted with high-explosive or thermal effect warheads for use against non-armored point targets, bunkers, and fortifications. Like the HJ-8, the HJ-9 utilizes a disposable container/launching tube, but the one for HJ-9 is heavier, weighing 37 kg (82 lb) because HJ-9 is larger than HJ-8. The diameter of the HJ-9 is 152 mm (6.0 in) and the missile is compatible with a variety of thermal imaging sights.

Variants
HJ-9 or HJ-9A (Mounted) Red Arrow Mounted on a WZ551 Type 92B 4x4 tactical vehicle or mounted on a NJ2046 4x4 tactical vehicle.
HJ-9A Red Arrow Semi-active millimeter wave radar guidance.
HJ-9 / HJ-9B This is the baseline variant, and is equipped with a tandem high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead and a laser beam-riding guidance system. This variant has in some sources also been referred to as the Red Arrow 9B, which is thought to have arisen from a designation change by the manufacturer, which may have referred to the variant as 9B initially. Control System The control system is semi-automatic, with TV equipment to accompany the rocket and transfer control commands by laser beam. The laser transmitter operates in the range of 0.9 μm and has a range of up to 5.5 μm. The control system of the complex is built on digital technologies using modern element base. For operation at night and in the conditions of limited visibility, the control system is equipped with a thermal sight operating in the range of 8-12 µm and providing target detection at a range of up to 4 km and their identification at a range of 2.5-3 km.
Combat Unit The combat unit is a tandem cumulative unit, which provides engagement of targets protected by dynamic armor. Armor penetration is 1100-1200mm homogeneous armor. According to the developers, the probability of hitting a tank-type target is 90%. The HJ-9 can also be equipped with a blast or thermobaric combat unit. This makes it possible to destroy enemy manpower and destroy long-term firing points and other engineering structures, including in mountainous terrain.
