Chin Feng I (Jing Feng I) Taiwanese Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)
Chin Feng I
The Chin Feng I (Jing Feng I) is a Taiwanese Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) classified as a tactical loitering munition, or suicide drone, developed by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST). The Chin Feng I is a critical element of Taiwan's asymmetric "Hellscape" strategy, which seeks to saturate littoral zones with low-cost, precision munitions to disrupt amphibious landing operations. This "one shot, one kill" tactical system is analogous to the U.S. Switchblade 300 or 600 series and is intended for short-range coastal defense. It enables small units or unmanned surface vessels (USVs) to engage high-value targets such as landing craft, radar systems, or command elements without direct exposure to enemy fire. The deployment of the Chin Feng I signifies an evolution of Taiwan's "Porcupine Strategy." By shifting from reliance on expensive, low-quantity platforms, such as F-16s or frigates, to the integration of low-cost, high-volume disposable drones, Taiwan seeks to impose a disproportionately high logistical and operational cost on invading forces. Launching these drones from unmanned boats (USVs) further reduces personnel risk and preserves combat power for sustained resistance.
