Marconi S-511
The Marconi S-511 is an S-band air traffic control (ATC) radar, representing a long-range variant within the Marconi S 500 series. It employs a high-power coaxial magnetron and supports frequency diversity through the use of two transmitter/receiver units. The system features a 5-meter carbon fiber reflector antenna with a double cosecant squared pattern and a dual-horn system for two-beam operation, providing an instrumented range of 200 nautical miles and a range resolution of 0.5 nautical miles. The lower beam offers variable polarization (linear vertical to circular), while the upper beam uses fixed circular polarization. The radar, which has a peak power of 650 kW and an average power of 550 W, is housed in a modular tower with an enclosed upper section for the turning gear, rotating at 15 revolutions per minute. Remote control and monitoring capabilities are integrated, and various display systems are compatible. In Canadian service, this equipment is designated as the AN/FPS-509.
