Description
The Type 653 Chinese Armored Recovery Vehicle is based on the chassis of the Type 69 MBT and is designed not only to recover this and other vehicles on the battlefield but also to undertake major repairs such as changing complete power packs, clearing obstacles, and preparing fire positions. Standard equipment includes a front-mounted hydraulically operated dozer blade, a hydraulic crane on the right side of the hull, the main winch with a capacity of 70 tonnes, auxiliary winch, tools, towbars, and cables. In addition to being used by the Chinese Army, small quantities of these have been sold to Bangladesh, Iraq, Pakistan, and Thailand as part of the Type 69 MBT sale.

Type 84 Medium Armored Recovery Vehicle
the Type 84 ARV has a crew of five and a combat weight of 38.5 tonnes. The winch has a minimum capacity of 32 to 35 tonnes and is provided with 130 m of cable that has a diameter of 28.5 mm.
Type 653A ARV
The Type 653A ARV is being marketed as part of the NORINCO PLZ-45 155 mm/45-calibre self-propelled howitzer system. This model has the winch with a maximum capacity of 70 tonnes, crane with a lifting capacity of 20 tonnes, rigid towing equipment for a vehicle weighing 40 tonnes and a dual purpose blade for dozing and anchoring.
Type 653B ARV
This is the latest model of the Type 653 ARV to be marketed. The main difference is the replacement of the original 580 hp diesel with a 730 hp engine, which gives a higher speed of 55 km/h and greater mobility.
Type 654 ARRV
China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) has completed development of a new Armoured Recovery and Repair Vehicle (ARRV) called the Type 654 and this is now being offered on the export market.

Dozer Blade
Mounted on the front of the hull and operated by two hydraulic cylinders, is the earthmoving dozer blade that can also act as an anchor for heavy winching operations. The full-width dozer blade has an earthmoving capacity of 100 m3/h on dry soil. The main winch access rollers are located between the twin hydraulic cylinders for the dozer blade and the blade has to be in the lower position for recovery.

Hydraulic Crane
The hydraulic crane jib with its full 360° turntable is in line with the driver's position. The crane jib is telescopic and is normally stowed to the rear for traveling. It can be extended to a maximum lifting height of 6 m and has a rated lifting torque (static) of 392 to 686 kN.m. The maximum Lifting Capacity is 10 tones.
