Description

The AN/TPX-42A is a Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) operating in the L-band (1030 MHz and 1060 MHz) with a peak power of 2 kW and an instrumented range of 200 nautical miles (370 km). This interrogator set functions as an automatic beacon and radar tracking system, designed for safe terminal airspace control in both land-based and amphibious environments. While primarily an Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system, it also processes radar data for target detection and tracking, automatically tracking aircraft equipped with Mode 1, 2, 3/A, and C transponders. It provides air traffic controllers with an alphanumeric display of aircraft identity, altitude, and other data, superimposed on radar video on plan position indicator consoles. AN/TPX-42A(V) variants, such as the -42A(V)10, incorporate a Programmable Indicator Data Processor (PIDP) and are integrated into various airport surveillance radars like the AN/FPN-47, AN/GPN-12 (ASR-7), AN/GPN-20 (ASR-8), and AN/FPS-67D, as well as maritime primary radar systems like the AN/SPN-43C and AN/SPS-49A.
