Description

The AN/SPS-52 is a shipborne 3D long-range air surveillance radar developed by Hughes Electronics for the U.S. Navy. Operating in the E/F band (2,910–3,100 MHz) with a peak power of 330 kW, it has an instrumented range of 240 nautical miles (445 km) and a range resolution of 150 meters. Its antenna is a planar array of slotted waveguides, mechanically rotating at 5 rpm for azimuth scanning and employing frequency scanning for electronic beam deflection in elevation. The AN/SPS-52C variant features different below-deck electronics and an antenna tilted at a 25-degree angle, compared to the 15-degree tilt of earlier versions. Most AN/SPS-52 radars have been decommissioned and replaced by the AN/SPS-48E, though some units may still be operational.
