Description

The LeoLabs Space Radar is an S-band (IEEE designation) or E/F-band (NATO designation) phased-array radar designed to monitor various objects in low-Earth orbit, including satellites, space debris, rocket bodies, and space stations. It operates by forming a very narrow antenna pattern that swivels simultaneously in two elevation angle planes; a reflecting object must pass through both planes for its velocity and orbit to be calculated from the measured values. Data from these radars is fed into a network, which currently comprises four large radar systems. The Costa Rica Space Radar, operational since April 1, 2021, enhances measurement accuracy, even for overflights with unfavorable approach angles, by forming a total of four crosswise-arranged antenna pattern planes.
