Description

The AN/APS-124 is an X-band airborne surveillance radar designed for maritime applications, operating with a peak power of 350 kW and an instrumented range of 160 nautical miles (296 km). It was integrated into the Sikorsky SH-60B “Seahawk” and Kaman YSH-2E “Seasprite” helicopters as a component of the Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System (LAMPS) III shipboard surveillance system. The radar features a planar array antenna, measuring 6 by 1 feet (183 by 31 cm), mounted in a flat radome under the forward fuselage, providing 360-degree coverage with a beamwidth of 1.2 degrees and an antenna rotation speed of up to 120 rpm. It supports pulse repetition frequencies of 470, 940, or 1880 Hz and corresponding pulsewidths of 2, 1, or 0.5 microseconds, allowing radar images to be displayed in-flight or data-linked to surface-ship displays. Achieving initial operational capability in 1983, the AN/APS-124 was later superseded by the AN/APS-147(V) multimode radar.
