Description

The VN-17 Chinese Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) is a heavy infantry fighting vehicle (HIFV) designed by China's North Industries Corporation (Norinco) to support main battle tanks (MBTs) in front line combat situations. It shares automotive features with the VT5 MBT and is sufficiently armoured to protect it against most threats that would ordinarily defeat an armoured personnel carrier (APC) or IFV. It is also notable for being one of the first projects where Norinco has included modularity as a design feature.

Main Weapon System
Note The VN17 is armed with a new turret that is unmanned, with the commander and gunner seated below the turret to minimise the impact of the weapon system on the hull. The turret is armed with a 30 mm cannon the cannon is thought to be a Norinco analogue of the Russian 2A42 30 mm cannon. It is known to have a dual-feed mechanism, a selective rate-of-fire, and a maximum output of 300 rds/min. The cannon can fire HE-I and APDS ammunition, has a muzzle velocity of 1,180 m/s with the latter round, and is effective against unarmoured targets at 2,500 m.
Coaxial Weapon System
Note 1 x 7.62mm General-Purpose Machine Gun
Anti-Tank Guided Missile
Note 2 × turret-mounted Red Arrow 12 ATGM. The Red Arrow 12 ATGM is a fire-and-forget system fitted with a tandem HEAT warhead. It has a maximum range of 4,000 m against ground-based targets and helicopters. The missile uses an IR seeker and is stated to be capable of penetrating 1,100 mm of RHA behind ERA at an incidence of 0°.
