Description
The Alenia Marconi ALE 3x5, a D-band (formerly L-band) air traffic control radar, features one of the largest antennas globally, measuring 45 by 15.5 feet. This design eliminates the need for a radome, as the antenna, weighing between 5 and 10 tons depending on optional equipment, is built to withstand severe weather. The "5" in its designation refers to its five distinct beams, one of which is dedicated to weather observation. The antenna comprises 12 rows with a total of 192 identical modules, each approximately 1.5 by 3 feet, with the bottom row tilted to enhance detection of targets flying just above the antenna.
