55Zh6U Nebo-U (Tall Rack-B) Russian Modernized 2D VHF Early Warning Radar
55Zh6U Nebo-U

The 55Zh6U “NEBO-U” (kyr.: 55Ж6У «Небо-У», NATO-Designator: “Tall Rack”) is a modernized, mobile, transportable VHF-band 3D surveillance radar designed for long-range detection of air targets operating at a wide range of speeds and altitudes. It can operate autonomously or provide analog and digital data to air defense centers. The system employs a phased array antenna, measuring 19 x 7m, with a frequency range of 175-200 MHz (VHF, NATO Band B). Echo signals from the altimeter antenna's 12 channels are digitized after conversion to an intermediate frequency. All space-time processing algorithms, including electronic beam scanning, interference protection, compression, accumulation, and measurement, are implemented as software within the radar signal processor, benefiting from improved electronics. Its transmission coding and signal processing techniques are optimized for a countermeasures polluted environment, and it is claimed to be effective against low-observability targets. Key specifications include a peak power of 500 kW, average power of 5 kW, an instrumented range of 700 km, accuracy of 500 m and 0.4°, and an antenna rotation speed of 6 revolutions per minute. It is associated with the S-300P (5V55) weapon system.
