Description

The AN/SPS-48E is a long-range, three-dimensional naval air-search radar operating in the E/F band (2900-3100 MHz) with a peak power of 2.2 MW and an instrumented range of 400 km. It provides contact range, bearing, and height information, displaying digital radar video, true bearing indications, and track positions on consoles. The system utilizes a frequency-scanning antenna and can adapt its performance to land or sea requirements via a software-implemented radar resource manager. Its high transmit power, simultaneous pencil beam transmissions, and Doppler waveforms enable detection of threats over 200 nautical miles away, including low-flying targets, cruise missiles, supersonic aircraft, helicopters, and ballistic missiles, with high-angle tracking up to 69 degrees and altitudes exceeding 1 million feet. The AN/SPS-48E is designed for easy integration, providing plots or tracks to C4I systems and formatted track data to modern weapon systems like Patriot, Improved Hawk, SM-2, ESSM, and RAM, while also accepting commands from external air defense or shipboard combat systems.
