MEADS

The Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS) is a trilateral development program involving the United States, Germany, and Italy, designed to complement or replace the PATRIOT system and engage tactical ballistic missiles. Germany, with EADS/LFK as its development company, plans to invest €1 billion in development and €3 billion in the production of 12 systems. The MEADS battery incorporates two radars: a UHF-band surveillance radar and an X-band fire control radar, with external sensors providing alerting and cueing information to the battalion's Tactical Operations Centers (TOCs). A standard fire unit, operated by 19 personnel, comprises one search radar, two fire control radars, two operations centers, and six launchers, each capable of holding 12 PAC-3 missiles. For shorter ranges and less demanding targets, MEADS can be supplemented with the highly mobile IRIS-T-SL (Surface Launched) missile, which integrates with networked air defense systems via a "Plug & Fight" data interface and uses an RF data link for in-flight target information transmission. During its Final System Demonstration in Italy, MEADS successfully identified, engaged, and destroyed ballistic missiles and hostile aircraft within a multiple-target scenario.
