Description

The FH-77BW L52 Archer Swedish 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH) are based on modified versions of two articulated all-terrain haulers developed by Volvo: the 30E 6×6 and VME A25C 8x8 articulated haulers. The chassis of both these haulers are modified to accept the 155 mm/52-calibre weapon and have a fully-armoured cab and engine compartment fitted at the front. The cab has single doors on either side and one at the rear, bullet-resistant and fragmentation-proof windows, and can accommodate a six-person crew. Mounted on the roof of the cab is a Norwegian Kongsberg Protector Remotely operated weapon system (ROWS) armed with a stabilised .50 M2 HB MG. The ordnance and the automated ammunition handling compartment is mounted at the rear end of the articulated hauler. The 52-calibre barrel has a MVS-470 muzzle-velocity radar, which feeds information into the onboard fire control computer. When deployed in the firing position, a large hydraulic stabiliser is lowered at the rear of the chassis to provide a more stable firing platform.

Main Weapon System
Note The Archer has a 52-calibre ordnance. The multi baffle muzzle brake, cradle, and recoil system are as per the FH-77B towed artillery system. The loading, laying, and firing of the weapon are undertaken from within the cab via remote control. The automatic loading system loads the 155 mm projectile followed by the charge, and enables a burst rate of fire of three rounds in 20 seconds. 126 modular charges and 21 rounds can be pre-loaded in the charge magazine and projectile magazine, respectively. With the automatic loading system, a crew of three can operate the system. The Archer can fire a wide range of 155 mm artillery projectiles, including the Swedish-developed 155 mm HEER base bleed, 155 mm HE, and 77 mm and 155 mm TR 54/55 training projectiles, along with more advanced Raytheon M982 Excalibur precision-guided munitions and the BAE Systems/Nexter Munitions 155 Bonus top-attack projectile.Maximum range depends on the 155 mm projectile/charge combination but is typically 40 km with conventional projectiles, 35 km with a 155 mm Bonus top-attack projectile, and 50 km with the Excalibur 155 mm M982 A1 increment 1b GPS-guided HE round. The howitzer can use NATO modular charges or Bofors uniflex 2 modular charges. THe Archer has a six-round multiple-round simultaneous-impact (MRSI) capability. As per BAE Systems, a full magazine of 21 rounds can be fired in 3.5 minutes. A .50 MG is also provided on the top of the cabin for protective fire, which can be operated remotely.
Fire Control System (FCS)
Note A computerised FCS is standard and the system is equipped with Sigma 30 Laser-gyro artillery navigation and pointing system. The systems is designed for autonomous shooting and offers immunity against GPS spoofing or jamming. The MVS-470 muzzle-velocity radar, placed at the rear of the chassis, also feeds information into the onboard FCS. A direct fire day/night sight is fitted, which enables targets to be engaged out to 2,000 m.
Protection
Armor The crew can remotely operate the Archer's weapon system from within the armoured cabin reported to have STANAG 4569 Level 2 capability providing protection against NBC threats, artillery fragmentation, mine attacks, and blast overpressure. The crew is also significantly separated from the armament and munitions and this further enhances the crew safety.
