Description

The Piranha V Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) is one variant of the fifth generation of the Mowag Piranha family of vehicles. It was designed by General Dynamics European Land Systems - Mowag GmbH. While the Piranha V is available with a MTU 6V199 TE21 diesel engine producing 430 kW, both Denmark and Spain have opted for a different Powerpack built by the Spanish company SAPA, consisting of a Scania Diesel engine with 480 kW coupled with the SW 624 automatic transmission, and an auxiliary power unit with 75 kW.

Desert Piranha The Desert Piranha is designed for employment in high temperature environments such as a desert. This variant is equipped with a central tire inflation system (CTIS) as well as large tires to effect improved mobility in sandy conditions. It can also be fitted with standard size tires for employment in conditions outside of deserts. It is also equipped with an air conditioning system 30 kW (18 kW + 12 kW) as well as blast attenuating seats for the crew and troops. (Commander/gunner and driver plus 9 combat equipped troops). The Desert Piranha is equipped with a Kongsberg Protector remote weapon station armed with a stabilized .50-cal M2 heavy-barrel machine gun. However, General Dynamics has produced a version fitted with a two-man Cockerill 3030/40 30-mm/40-mm turret.
