Description
The AN/FPS-85, manufactured by Raytheon E-Systems, is an Early Warning Radar and the world's first large phased array radar. Constructed in the 1960s at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, it operates at 442 MHz with a peak power of 30 MW and an average power of 10 kW, providing an instrumented range of 3,000 km. Its phased array antenna forms a beam extending from 155° to 205° in azimuth, scanned at 35° elevation. Despite its aging technology, the AN/FPS-85 remains the United States' primary space surveillance radar due to its power and coverage, with Southwest Research Institute leading an engineering effort since 1992 to upgrade its reliability and performance.
