Description

The AN/TPS-78 is a long-range S-band (IEEE designation) or E/F-band (NATO designation) air surveillance radar manufactured by Northrop Grumman in the United States. Operating between 2,800 and 3,100 MHz, it is designed for detecting high-speed and high-altitude targets up to an instrumented range of 445 km (240 NM) in challenging environmental conditions. Its 2.5-meter high by 5.5-meter wide phased array antenna uses a stacked beam architecture and digital beamforming to provide full-time, full-volume coverage, while Moving Target Indicator (MTI) and Moving Target Detection (MTD) processing mitigate clutter from ground returns, rain, or chaff. The entire system, including the transmitter and all electronics, is housed in a single 4.3-meter (14-foot) ISO shelter, allowing transport by a single C-130 aircraft. With an antenna rotation speed of 10 revolutions per minute, a mean time between critical failures (MTBCF) exceeding 3,000 hours, and a mean time to repair (MTTR) under 0.5 hours, the AN/TPS-78 is in service with the U.S. Air Force and other international customers.
