Description

The AR-320 (AMES Type 93) is an S-band (IEEE designation) or E/F-band (NATO designation) long-range surveillance radar, operating with a peak power of 24 kW and an instrumented range of 250 nautical miles (approximately 470 km). It features a range resolution of 70 meters and a beamwidth of 1.4 degrees. This radar system was developed through a collaboration between Siemens-Plessey Radar and ITT-Gilfillan, combining ITT-Gilfillan's Series 320 3D antenna and transmitter (components found in systems like the AN/SPS-48 and AN/TPS-32) with Plessey's AR-3D (Type 94 radar) receiver, signal processor, raster scan displays, and radar software. Although initially designed as a Class 1 radar for the NADGE network on NATO’s southern flank, it was not adopted for that purpose. The UK Ministry of Defence ordered six AR-320 radar systems in 1983.
